It's Genetic, Innit!

When someone discovers they have genetic haemochromatosis, one of their first thoughts is often about their family. Could my brother have it without knowing? What about my sister, who has always been tired? Have I passed it to my children?

These are natural questions. And they lead to one of the most hopeful things about this condition: knowing that it runs in a family gives other people the chance to find out about it early, often long before iron overload has caused lasting damage.

This chapter is about making that opportunity understandable. We will look at the genes in plain English, use five illustrations to show what parents can pass on, and then turn to the practical questions: who in the family should be offered testing, what the results mean, and how to start those conversations.
